Manchester United were expected to have been crowned Europa League champions, but they were beaten by Villarreal in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.

Emery has a status of being top dog in the Europa League, as he won the competition three times in a row while in charge of Sevilla.

However, the Europa League serial winner lost to Chelsea when he faced the Blues in the Europa League final while in charge of Arsenal just two seasons ago.

Chelsea heavily dealt with Emery’s Arsenal as the Blues won the game 4-1. An Eden Hazard brace, as well as goals from Olivier Giroud and Pedro Rodriguez were enough to seal a very comfortable win for Chelsea.

Emery has looked back at that game and revealed that it helped him in his win over Manchester United.

“I believe it’s not a sporting revenge at all,” Emery said after Villarreal’s win over United.

“I try to enjoy every moment, winning and losing. I try to create new circumstances, so everywhere I have been, even in England at Arsenal, I have learnt a lot, met many people, other cultures and football.

“At the end of that story was professional frustration, but some other doors opened then.

“Winning today is a satisfaction, but for my club today, as it was when I was at Sevilla.

“When I was at Arsenal, we played a Europa League final and could not win but it is a process, from that game I learnt a lot to win this one maybe.”
