Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has now entered the last 12 months of his contract with the Spanish giants. The 28-year-old isn’t keen on extending his stay with Real Madrid and has since been linked with an exit from the club.
Varane has been strongly linked with Chelsea rivals Manchester United, but it seems the Blues are also monitoring the situation of the Frenchman.
According to ABC, Chelsea have opened conversation with Madrid about their defender, with Thomas Tuchel requiring a new centre-back as one of his main signings ahead of the new season.
Varane is a top player and is highly rated. He has played 360 times for Madrid, and has won four Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles.
Meanwhile, former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho had once hailed Varane as the best central defender in the world.
“I think Varane is the best central defender in the world,” said Mourinho in an interview with Yahoo back in 2014.
