Everyone expected England to beat Scotland when the two teams faced each other last weekend. However, the Scots showed great resolve to hold England down and both teams settled for a goalless draw.
Former Liverpool and Scotland star Graeme Souness was pleased with the display by the Scots and was particularly impressed with the performance of Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour.
“I think throughout the 90 minutes you saw Scotland players putting bodies on the line putting blocks in,” Souness told ITV.
“Can I emphasise this and make this point people are talking about Scotland, ‘we’re passionate and work harder’, we did that but also played better than England for much of the game.
The passing was better, the movement was better, they looked more of a team than England did.
‘The little boy Gilmour for his first international start was fantastic best midfielder on the pitch.
‘I don’t want anyone to leave tonight and think this was just about Scotland’s effort tonight. It was a good team performance.’
Gilmour’s performance was likened with that of his Chelsea teammate N’Golo Kante, as Crystal Palace and Netherlands full-back Patrick van Aanholt was also among those blown away by his performance.
“Fair play Scotland, them tribal games hit different,” he wrote on Twitter. “Billy Gilmour was basically N’Golo Kante.”
