Croatia have exited from the European Championship after falling to Spain in the round of 16.
Mateo Kovacic’s Croatia came from 3-1 down to force the game into extra time after levelling the scores, but eventually lost in extra time, with Spain going on to win 5-3.
Kovacic who’s often star man in the middle of the park for Chelsea didn’t seem to be at his best for Croatia in Euro 2020, and he even received criticisms from his countrymen at home.
With Croatia ahead at 1-0, Pablo Sarabia scored for Spain and former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness suggested that Kovacic could have done a lot better, as he failed to track back into the box leading to the goal.
“The Spain goal is completely avoidable,” Souness said on ITV.
“Kovacic wins the first ball, but he must know that the ball is going to come back into the box. He needs to get goal side of his man and Spain simply does not score, it is overall poor play by him.”
