Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen was awarded the Star of the Match following his performance as Denmark defeated Russia 4-1 and secured a place in the Round of 16 of Euro 2020.

The Chelsea centre-back scored a crucial third goal that killed the Russians’ hopes for a comeback. After a scramble in the Russian box, the ball fell kindly to Christensen, who released a piledriver to ensure that the Russians go home.

Amid Christensen’s thunderous strike and his wild, emotional celebration on Monday, even the commentators were left in awe of the strike.

“Can you hit a ball cleaner than that, that’s just ridiculous,” Rio Ferdinand said, reacting on punditry duty for the BBC.

“What a strike! The keeper couldn’t get anywhere near this one,” Dion Dublin screamed on commentary.

“The ball goes out of shot on the screen we’re looking at, it’s 25 yards out, Christensen puts his head down and hits it with his right foot and the keeper can’t do anything – it’s over his right shoulder!

“What a strike, you’ll never hit a sweeter one.”
