Chelsea star Kai Havertz didn’t seem to have impressed German fans in their opening Euro 2020 defeat against France.
Some former German stars had urged Germany boss Joachim Low to bench Havertz for their second group clash against Portugal.
German outlet TZ interviewed seven of the nation’s footballing legends about their preferred line-ups for their decisive clash against Portugal. Surprisingly, out of those seven, five dropped Havertz for Werner in their XIs.
1990 World Cup winner Olaf Thon didn’t want Havertz to start in attack as he said: “Germany must now fight their way into the tournament and make a statement.
“The offence needs an adjustment because Kai Havertz has not convinced. Why not give Timo Werner a chance?”
Havertz disappointed his critics as he scored a goal and played a key role in forcing Portugal defenders to two own goals.
Havertz is continuing his fine form that saw him finish the season well with Chelsea, and we are sure he’d be in superb form next season.
