Chelsea signed Thiago Silva on a free transfer at the end of last season, as the Brazilian made the switch to Chelsea from Paris Saint-Germain.
The 36-year-old joined on a year’s contract after the expiry of his contract with PSG, and he proved to be an important player in the course of the season.
The veteran defender played 34 times in all competitions and scored twice for Chelsea, as he was often the man in the middle of the back three.
The Brazilian will be at the club for another year, as his contract with Chelsea has been extended by a year.
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia has hailed the coming of Thiago Silva to Chelsea, insisting that the club knew they were signing a world-class player.
She said: “When we brought Thiago Silva in last summer, we knew we were adding a world-class player to the squad. Thiago has duly shown everyone at Chelsea his immense quality throughout this season, and he has had a huge influence on and off the pitch for us.
“We said when he signed that we hoped Thiago would add new trophies to his impressive list of honours, and he has done just that with our success in the Champions League this weekend. We now hope that he carries on in exactly the same fashion in the coming year.”
