The 2021-22 Premier League campaign starts on August 13, and it’s expected to be one of the toughest we’ve seen in recent years.

It won’t be a surprise if the race for the title goes down the wire, as the top teams will be keen on displacing Manchester City as champions.

Football pundit Paul Merson has tipped Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool as the teams to fight for the title next season.

However, Merson believes that the clubs whose players reached the latter stage of the Premier League might be affected.

For Chelsea, the likes of Thiago Silva, Mason Mount and Jorginho who are key members of the squad may not be available for the start of the season as they would miss pre-season games, and Merson thinks this could be a determining factor if not well handled.

Paul Merson told Sportskeeda: “Regardless of what happens in the transfer market, as I said before, I expect a really close Premier League title race.

“Another important thing to keep an eye on is when the big players return to their respective sides after their international commitments.

“Many Premier League stars represented their countries at Euro 2020 and Copa America this summer, so they could well miss a few games at the start of the new season.”
