Ahead of Saturday’s Premier League against Liverpool at Anfield, a Chelsea player is giving Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel a tough problem to solve.
Chelsea left wing-back Marcos Alonso has had a fine start to the new season despite almost leaving the club this summer.
Alonso has started all of Chelsea’s games this season – Super Cup victory over Villarreal, 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace and 2-0 victory over Arsenal – and has impressed in all three games.
Ben Chilwell is Tuchel’s first-choice left wing-back but Alonso’s performance is making it difficult for the Chelsea boss to start his favourite left wing-back.
Chilwell didn’t start pre-season with Chelsea due to his participation in the Euros with England and Tuchel understandably had to trust Alonso.
With Chelsea set to face Liverpool on Saturday, Tuchel has a tough decision to make on who starts at left wing-back.
Liverpool’s right flank is undoubted their strongest given it’s where Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold operate on and Tuchel might be wondering if he should stick with Alonso or start Chilwell.
Alonso deserves to start against Liverpool given his fine start to the season but it’s also logical to give Chilwell his first start of the season as he is more athletic and assured defensively.
Tuchel certainly has a tough call to make ahead of the game against Liverpool.
