Chelsea are making plans for the signing of Jules Kounde from Sevilla. Thomas Tuchel is believed to be a fan of the 22-year-old Frenchman, and Chelsea had reportedly offered cash plus Kurt Zouma for the deal.
With Zouma refusing a move to Spain, Chelsea may now be forced to trigger his release clause of £67m.
Recent reports suggest the deal may happen before the end of the summer transfer window, but former Blue Frank Leboeuf has told Chelsea to avoid the signing of Kounde and rather trust Trevoh Chalobah.
According to Leboeuf, Chelsea already have too many defenders at the club.
Asked whether Chelsea need to sign Kounde considering the number of defenders already at Stamford Bridge, Leboeuf told ESPN: “That’s a good question, that’s a very good question.
“I almost had tears in my eyes when I saw Trevoh Chalobah scoring, it was absolutely fantastic. He was very good in the Super Cup and was good against Crystal Palace.
“I’m very fond of that player and I have doubts that Chelsea need another defender. They already have lots of defenders and Chalobah is already on top of who we were thinking of.
“So what’s the point? Kounde is a fantastic player but you cannot make everyone happy so what’s the point having Chalobah, Zouma, Christensen, Rudiger, Thiago when most of them will be on the bench?
“You have to make choices, you have two places for five or six players, it’s too many. If Chalobah keeps playing like this, they don’t need Kounde.”
