Tammy Abraham had maintained the No. 9 shirt at Chelsea until his recent departure to Roma where he has teamed up with former boss Jose Mourinho.
Tammy Abraham wore the No. 9 jersey in his two years with the Chelsea senior team, and Romelu Lukaku’s unveiling as the new No. 9 had to wait until the departure of the young striker who was heading out to Italy.
The new Chelsea No. 9, Romelu Lukaku, has revealed that he’s happy to be back and can’t wait to start playing with a hungry Chelsea team.
“It feels great to be back,” Lukaku said at his official unveiling press conference. “It doesn’t feel like I’m coming into a new team because I’ve been here before and I know a few of the players from before.
“I’m really happy to be here and it’s a good feeling to be joining the European champions. The guys are hungry for more and they want to keep winning. In training yesterday, I could see there was a really good intensity and everyone looked sharp.
“Now I have the chance to join a team that’s very hungry and very ambitious. I can’t wait to add something to this group and I’m excited to get started.”
Tammy Abraham did okay to break the ‘No. 9 curse’ at Chelsea with 18 goals in his first season. However, his second season didn’t go just fine under Thomas Tuchel. Despite that, he was still joint scorer at the club in all competitions.
For Lukaku, he’d be aiming to break every record there is while wearing the No. 9 jersey.
