Tuchel explains why Thiago Silva, Mason Mount and Jorginho did not start against Villarreal

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel surprised several Chelsea fans with his decision not to start Thiago Silva, Mason Mount and Jorginho against Villarreal.

Only five of the players who started against Manchester City in the Champions League final in May – Edouard Mendy, Antonio Rudiger, N’Golo Kante, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner – started against Villarreal.

Explaining his team selection against Villarreal, Tuchel said: “Of course, we take any match seriously because it’s what we demand of ourselves.

“We set certain standards for ourselves and it’s good to know because it gives us the attitude we need to give us the chance of a result.

“I hope it doesn’t make a difference whether it’s the European final or the first match of the Premier League. These are competitive matches and we’re here to compete for the win and for the trophy.

“We gave a lot of thought into it [the team selection], and in the end I stopped and thought, no we do the same as we did against Tottenham because first of all, we were happy with the first 60 minutes. The guys have already played a few pre-season friendly matches.

“We have a lot of guys in training, who had an in-house match for 45 minutes but didn’t have the shirt on after the Euros and so we said, no, this is a competitive match. We do not break our head now with minutes and how much can anybody play and do they need to share 90 minutes? No, we went for the team who played against Tottenham.”
