According to The Telegraph via Daily Mail, Chelsea tried to sell Ross Barkley to West Bromwich Albion but his eye-watering salary doused any hopes of leaving Stamford Bridge.

The 27 year old midfielder isn’t part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans for the season and hasn’t played a minute of Premier League action in any of the club’s opening three games.

With Barkley desperate for regular playing time, the Blues hoped to sell him to West Brom but the deal quickly fell apart when the Championship baulked at his £110,000-a-week wages.

Barkley spent last season on loan at Aston Villa but he didn’t set the world alight at Villa Park. He played 24 times for Dean Smith’s men, scoring three and assisting one.

Since joining Chelsea from Everton in 2017 for £15million, Barkley has played 86 times, scoring 11 times – featuring most prominently in 2018-19, where he played 48 times and scored five.
