Chelsea were on the hunt for a centre-back throughout the summer window after the £97m acquisition of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan.
The Blues tried to sign Sevilla defender Jules Kounde but a move failed to materialise due to Sevilla’s asking price.
After failing to sign Kounde during the summer, the Blues have now turned attention to Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, according to Italian media outlet Il Bianconero.
The report is also backed by another Italian media outlet Calciomercato, which adds that the Blues are willing to offer Timo Werner plus cash for the Dutch defender.
However, Juventus are pleased with Chelsea’s offer as they don’t want to give up De Ligt for money and a forward, who hasn’t done well at Stamford Bridge.
Former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has given a glowing reference on the 22 year old defender, predicting he would become one of the best defenders in the world.
Talking to Sky Sport Italia in January 2020 whilst boss of Juve, the Italian said: “I am the first to be convinced that he will become the best defender in the world.”
