Young Chelsea attacking midfielder Thierno Ballo has joined Austrian club Rapid Vienna on a season-long loan deal.
The 19-year-old returns to Austria, the country where he spent much of his childhood and for whom he represents at Under-21 international level.
Ballo’s loan move to Rapid Vienna is his first taste of professional football and there’s no buy-option in the loan deal despite Rapid Vienna’s attempts to include one.
Ballo joined the Chelsea academy from German side Viktoria Koln in 2018. He impressed at the U18 and U19 levels at Cobham, before helping the U23 Development Squad to a PL2 title, finishing as top goalscorer.
Rapid Vienna are currently fourth in the Austrian Bundesliga after the opening six matches. They have been drawn in a Europa League group alongside West Ham, Genk and Dinamo Zagreb.
“We have been watching Thierno for a long time, and his talent makes him a very interesting player,” Rapid Vienna’s head coach Didi Kühbauer said
“He wants to take the next step in our development and we will all support him in this. We are therefore very pleased that we have succeeded in signing another highly talented player for this season.”
