Chelsea left wing-back Ben Chilwell has struggled for game time since the European championship during the summer.
After a fine season where he even won the Champions League, Chilwell didn’t see a minute of action during the summer as Gareth Southgate persevered with Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw.
Alonso has started all six of Chelsea’s Premier League games so far this season, with Chilwell’s only start coming in the League Cup victory against Aston Villa.
England boss Gareth Southgate has snubbed Chilwell for the upcoming international games, and has urged the 24-year-old to fight for his place in the team.
“I said to Ben after the tournament [Euro 2020] that I knew it would have been a hard experience. What he must do now is fight to get back in,” said Southgate.
“You have to roll your sleeves up and show your character. He needs to fight his way back in Chelsea’s team.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea boss has explained that Chilwell is suffering in mentality having not featured in the Euros, and blames it as the reason for his lack of game time at Chelsea so far this season.
“When he arrived here [after Euro 2020] I felt him a bit mentally tired, a bit still worrying about the situation. Marcos [Alosno] was here the whole pre-season, he did every single training session and he took this opportunity and was so, so great, with such huge quality and attitude,” Tuchel said.
“So Marcos was crucial for us from the first day in training, and then he delivered in Chilly’s position. And these are our two specialists for the same position, so this is a tough competition for both of them.”
