The Blues progressed to the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday night after a penalty shootout victory over Aston Villa.

Romelu Lukaku, Mason Mount, Ross Barkley and Reece James all converted for Chelsea during the shootout while Ben Chilwell failed to convert his penalty.

Fans were surprised that Timo Werner, who has a good penalty record while at RB Leipzig, didn’t take a spot-kick in the shootout.

Werner has now revealed why he didn’t take a spot-kick against Aston Villa.

“I had some pain in my calf but with only three substitutes, I couldn’t go off,” Werner, who was victim of a heavy challenge late in the second half, said.

“But when you have fit players on the pitch, it’s better they shoot than me today.”
