Ruben Loftus-Cheek was expected to go out on loan during the summer transfer window, but he ended up staying at the club as no deal could be sealed before deadline.
The 25-year-old couldn’t shine much in a struggling Fulham team last season but he has now shown that he still has the quality in him.
Blues boss Thomas Tuchel has recently featured Loftus-Cheek in a No. 6 role and also as a double pivot, and he has now revealed that the academy product can also play further forward as a No. 8.
“What I like about him is he’s very, very safe on the ball,” Tuchel told Chelsea TV.
“He has the body to protect the back three, he has the body to fight off players, to be physical.
“You could see from time to time it’s nice when he drives with the ball.
“I think he can play both – he can play as a single No.6, like he did [against Aston Villa], he can play in the No.8 position, then it’s natural he can play in a double No.6.
“He did a huge step forward, fighting for his place, it was a good match for him.”
One thing is now certain – Loftus-Cheek has forced himself into Thomas Tuchel’s plans with his recent performances.
