Former Inter Milan striker Diego Milito has slammed Romelu Lukaku for the manner he left the Italian club.
Lukaku won the Serie A title with Inter last season, and was a key player for the Serie A giants under Antonio Conte.
Lukaku was linked with Chelsea all through the summer, but the Belgian and his agent ruled out any move away from the club.
“Yes, I am staying,” Lukaku told Dutch broadcaster VTM in July.
“I’ve already had contact with the man who normally becomes our new manager. Maybe I shouldn’t say that yet… but it was a very positive conversation.”
However, he sealed a £97.5m move to Chelsea in August to become Chelsea’s most expensive signing.
Lukaku spent two years at Inter Milan, and Milito believes a player of his calibre shouldn’t have lied to the fans.
“There is one thing you should never do: make a promise you can’t keep,” Milito told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“A player like him, who has given so much, can decide to go elsewhere, but the fans are disappointed precisely because of those comments.”
Milito spent five years at Inter, and was a top striker for the club’s treble success under Jose Mourinho in 2010.
Our verdict: In all fairness, we understand the plight of the Inter Milan fans and how painful it can be to lose a beloved player who had promised to stay. But then, Lukaku meant to keep his words, but a return to Chelsea was an opportunity he couldn’t turn down. He had many scores to settle in the Premier League and many reassurances to make at Stamford Bridge.
P.S: He who hasn’t failed a promise should cast the first stone!
