‘We tried everything’ — Tuchel explains reason for Mendy’s absence

Chelsea defeated Tottenham 3-0 away at the Tottenham Stadium, and it was a massive victory for the Blues as Chelsea went top of the league.

First choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was absent from the game, as Tuchel gave a first league start to Kepa Arrizabalaga, with goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli on the bench for the first time in the Premier League.

Tuchel revealed before the start of the game that Mendy got a knock and described it as a ‘huge hit’. According to the Chelsea boss, the medical team did everything to get the Senegalese ready for the game but to no avail.

“Edou got a huge hit, we tried everything in the last days but he never felt fully comfortable in diving,” said Tuchel before the match.

Kepa did decently and kept a clean sheet as Chelsea won the game 3-0.

Meanwhile, Mendy has hailed Kepa and Bettinelli for providing top competition for him as Chelsea number one.

“When you play for this kind of club, you will find big competition [for places], a big fight for playing,” he told Chelsea’s website.

“You can see it at Manchester City and at Liverpool – two good goalkeepers who are ready to play. So you have to be the best for yourself but for the team also because when the coach puts you on the pitch, you have to show why he called you.

“Every time you have to show it, and you have to push each other at training. It’s competition and Kepa, me or Marcus [Bettinelli], we want to be the best for the team.”
