According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea had the chance to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma as a free agent but chose to trust Edouard Mendy.
The Senegalese international goalkeeper has continued his good form from last season and was named man of the match in Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Brentford on Saturday.
Romano tweeted: “Chelsea had the chance to sign Donnarumma as free agent, months ago. The board wanted to trust Mendy as ‘he’s our goalkeeper for next years too’
“7 years ago Edouard was unemployed, lining up at a local job center & ready to quit football. Now he’s untouchable at Chelsea.”
Donnarumma joined French side Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent during the summer after Chelsea withdrew interest in the former AC Milan goalkeeper.
