England head coach Gareth Southgate had initially named two Chelsea players for the upcoming international games

England have two World Cup qualifier matches against Andorra and Hungary this month, and Mason Mount and Reece James were initially selected for the games.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was surprised to see James named in the Three Lions squad following his ankle injury sustained against Manchester City.

Southgate has now opted to take off James from the squad and has replaced him with Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell.

Chilwell had been dropped from last month’s international games due to a lack of game time at Chelsea. But he eventually featured against Southampton over the weekend – his first Premier League start of the season, and he scored a stunning goal to help secure Chelsea’s win over the Saints.

Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel had mocked Southgate’s decision, as he wondered whether injured Reece James was invited to England water polo squad.

“I thought maybe Reece was called up to the England water polo team because he trains in the pool,” said Tuchel.

“I was a bit surprised, but I understand he was selected.

“This will not happen, because he’s training in the pool.

“It can only be a misunderstanding.”
