Three of the biggest names in the Premier League all failed to make the cut at Chelsea, and all three eventually left to find their feet outside the club. Only one was able to come back, and the Blues had to spend £97.5m on his signing.
Chelsea once had Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah in their ranks, but eventually sold the three of them, and they went on to become world-class players.
Chelsea and also Jose Mourinho have been blamed for not grooming the trio and selling them off, but former Blue Glen Johnson thinks that the right decision was made at the time and claimed that they wouldn’t have made it this big if they stayed long at Chelsea.
“Obviously if he’d stayed at Manchester United, he wouldn’t have been the player he is today. It’s one of those hindsight things,” Johnson told bettingexpert.
“It’s like Chelsea selling Kevin De Bruyne. These players go away, they learn their trade somewhere else and then they turn into the player they are.
“I don’t think any of these players would be the players they were if they stayed around. It’s the same as Mohamed Salah.
“If he stayed at Chelsea, he wouldn’t be the player he is now. So, of course, Man United regret selling Lukaku, but at the time, it was probably the right thing to do.”
