Five Chelsea players made the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or award this year, as Cesar Azpilicueta, Mason Mount, Romelu Lukaku, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho made the shortlist.

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, PSG star Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski are the three favorites for the award.

Surprisingly, PSG superstar Messi has backed Neymar, Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe for the award as he shunned Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, who had already picked up the UEFA Player of the Year.

Messi told L’Equipe: “Obviously, I have two players in my team that I would vote for, [Neymar] and Kylian [Mbappe].

“And then Robert Lewandowski, who has just had a great year, and Karim Benzema, who was excellent.”

Messi knows Jorginho is a key contender for award, having won the Champions League and European Cup, but he has tried to play smart by downplaying the impact of the Chelsea midfielder.
