Reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea missed out on the opportunity to sign up goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma during the summer transfer window.

Donnarumma was available on a free transfer during the summer transfer window as his contract with AC Milan has expired.

Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, Romano revealed that the 22-year-old’s agent Mino Raiola offered Donnarumma to Chelsea, but the Blues rather decided to stick with Edouard Mendy as the club’s first choice goalkeeper.

“Chelsea had the chance to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma as a free agent,” explained Romano.

“It was around March or April with Mino Raiola they had some opportunities on this side.

“Donnarumma was not convinced on the Premier League. It was not Chelsea, but Donnarumma was not excited about a Premier League move.

“He wanted to try something different and Paris-Saint Germain was his destination.

“But Chelsea too, they were not saying: ‘okay, let’s sign Donnarumma.’ They were saying: ‘we have Edouard Mendy.’”

Indeed, Mendy has even looked in better shape this season, and the decision made by the club to keep him has been justified with his amazing performances this season.
