According to ESPN, Spanish side Barcelona are monitoring Cesar Azpilicueta’s contract situation at Chelsea.

Azpilicueta’s Chelsea contract expires at the end of the season and the Chelsea captain is yet to extend his Chelsea contract.

Barca signed Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia on free transfers last summer, and the Spanish side will reportedly continue to target out-of-contract players due to financial situation.

New Barcelona boss Xavi is keen on signing Arrizabalaga due to his ability to play at right-back in a four-man defence or on the right of a back three. He has even played as a centre-back in a back four at times for Spain.

Xavi also wants Azpilicueta because he would add leadership and experience to a youthful backline that includes Sergino Dest (21), Eric Garcia (20), Oscar Mingueza (22) and Ronald Araujo (22).

Azpilicueta has made over 400 appearances for Chelsea since joining from French side Marseille in 2012.
