According to The Mirror, Chelsea legend John Terry has emerged as a surprise candidate to become the next Newcastle manager.

Newcastle United sacked Steve Bruce last month following the club’s takeover, with Graeme Jones currently in interim charge and overseeing their 3-0 home loss to Chelsea at the weekend.

Terry, who won five Premier League titles during his time at Stamford Bridge, was former assistant manager at Aston Villa but left Dean Smith’s side in July to pursue his ambition of becoming a manager in the near future.

Terry’s odds with bookmakers to replace Steve Bruce at St James’ Park were slashed on Friday evening, fuelling speculation on social media.

Speaking after leaving Villa in July, Terry said: “My immediate plan is to spend some quality time with my family and, thereafter, hopefully take up some invitations to visit clubs and managers around Europe to develop my aim and objective of becoming a manager.

“It has always been my ambition to move into football management and, providing the right opportunity presents itself, I feel ready to take up such a challenge.”
