Why Chelsea signed Saul Niguez despite Tuchel not wanting the midfielder

Chelsea signed Saul Niguez on transfer deadline day from Spanish champions Atletico Madrid with the Blues having the option to make the move permanent.

The 26-year-old has featured just twice in the Premier League, starting only once in the 3-0 win over Aston Villa, a game in which he was taken off at half-time.

According to Carrusel Deportivo via Daily Express, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was never keen on signing Saul.

The report claims the Blues signed Saul Niguez as a favour to his agent, Josh Barnett.

Saul started Chelsea’s Carabao Cup victory over Southampton and Tuchel hinted more minutes could follow in due course.

“Was a good match, a huge step in the right direction for him. I am happy,” he said.

“We thought maybe he would be struggling with the intensity at the 70th minute but he got better and better, had chances and shots.

“We thought let’s keep him and give him the minutes. It was a good step for him.”
