Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell has been out injured since the 4-0 win over Juventus in the Champions League clash last month.

The Chelsea left wing-back has been very impressive this season, but his injury has been a cause for concern, with Marcos Alonso the only first team player who can fill in that position.

Chilwell was in a superb run of form until he suffered a major setback against Juventus when he had to be subbed off.

According to reports, Ben Chilwell will now miss the rest of the season and will undergo knee surgery in a bid to return to training in time ahead of the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

Chelsea had hoped that the 25-year-old would not need to have surgery, but the club has reluctantly accepted that Chilwell requires an operation.

Tuchel had hoped that the club won’t be needing to sign a new left-back in January. He said earlier in December: “Having a look at players and it being possible to get them in winter, there’s a big gap between these two situations.

“The best option would be that Ben continues his positive evaluation. He is in a good place mentally and physically. He did some running. Everything looks good, so hopes are still up [of not requiring surgery and a quick return]. But we cannot confirm it.

“First, we be sure what we do with Ben. We’re still there. Then we decide if we go for internal solutions and if we trust that we can overcome this period. Everything depends on Ben Chilwell and how long he is out.”
