According to The Athletic, former Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero is set to pen a short-term deal with Southampton.

The 40 year old goalkeeper has been without a club since he left Chelsea last summer and will join the St Mary’s side as a free agent.

Southampton are facing a goalkeeper injury crisis with Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster both injured, leaving Harry Lewis as the only fit goalkeeper.

Caballero has been training with AFC Wimbledon to keep himself fit since leaving Chelsea.

Caballero was keen to join as soon as he heard about the opportunity and one of the key attractions for Southampton was that his style will fit into the club’s goalkeeping playbook.
