This year’s Ballon d’Or ranking has gone on to be one of the most controversial in recent history.

Many believe Argentina superstar Lionel Messi doesn’t deserve a record 7th Ballon d’Or award, with many favouring Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski as the best player in the world.

Messi ended up as the winner, Lewandowski came in 2nd place and Jorginho 3rd.

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent has claimed that Chelsea midfielder Jorginho didn’t deserve to be among the top three best players in the world.

Bent doesn’t think Jorginho is the best player for Chelsea or Italy and doesn’t deserve to win it based on that analogy.

“He’s not the best player at Chelsea and he’s not the best player in the Italian squad,” Bent told talkSPORT.

“He’s just part of two very good teams, does that make him the third-best player in the world?”

Bent’s argument is flawed, as Chelsea’s system is built on team work and not a star player. Since the exit of Eden Hazard, Chelsea have done well without a best player tag. Likewise, in the era of the Old Guard, Chelsea didn’t have a best player per say, but a formidable team.

Luka Modric won the Ballon d’Or award when Cristiano Ronaldo was his team’s ‘best player’, and a certain Fabio Cannavaro has won the award in similar circumstances.
