“I have overplayed him” – Thomas Tuchel confirms key Chelsea player is injured ahead of Zenit game

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel admits he predicted that Jorginho would suffer a dip in form due to his lack of rest.

The Italian international made mistakes in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United and the 3-2 defeat at West Ham.

Tuchel also admitted he has overplayed Jorginho this season due to injuries to Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante.

“The mistake we did against Watford and West Ham is in a high-pressing moment, if you see Jorginho doing a mistake like this I don’t think we have a structural or behavioural problem, it’s more a technical, decision-making problem,” said Tuchel.

“And this also refers to mental and physical fatigue. If you see now that Jorginho is out with back pain you know he played with back pain against West Ham.

“He played because we’ve missed Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante for such a long time, so this is what I meant, sometimes you overload and overplay players.

“Especially with Jorgi, he comes from the Euros and the Champions League, he comes straight away with no pre-season to the Super Cup final. We knew that in some weeks he will face a dip in freshness, a dip in form.

“And exactly in this moment where it happens, absolutely natural, our two main other midfielders are out with injury.

“This is maybe where our problems refer to. But still, we can do better, we can improve in the details and in every aspect of the game and also in the build-up in our own half.”
