Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been under fire for the mistakes he made against West Ham.

Mendy conceded a cheap penalty in the first half, in what was a very comfortable game for Chelsea, and it marked the beginning of Chelsea’s problem on the day.

With the scores at 2-2, Chelsea were chasing a late victory, but ended up losing the game as a fluke cross from Arthur Masuaku was parried into the net by the Chelsea goalkeeper.

Mendy is usually very confident in goal and has been reliable since last season, with clean sheets after clean sheets.

Chelsea hero Joe Cole has decided not to blame Mendy for his mistakes, as he said that footballers aren’t robots and everyone has their off days.

“Mendy was at fault for the penalty,” said Cole.

On Masuaku’s winner, he added: “That is a freak of a goal. You can’t blame him [Mendy], he’s been outstanding for such a long time.

“Goalkeepers are human beings, not robots. I think it did take a little deflection.

“Freak of a goal, and it would take something like that to beat this Chelsea team – a world-class goal or something like that out of the ordinary.”
