The African Cup of Nations is set to be hosted in Cameroon in January, but there have been calls for the competition to be called off due to the rising case of coronavirus.

However, former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o, who was recently voted as the President of FECAFOOT (Cameroonian Football Federation), has slammed such suggestions and insisted that the competition can and should go on.

Eto’o believes the central African nation can successfully host the competition, and wondered why there weren’t calls for European Championship to be cancelled during the summer.

Eto’o told Canal+ : “Why should it be postponed? I don’t see why it wouldn’t take place.

“I don’t think this is a responsible way of doing things. Or to be willing to do things.

“The (Cameroonian) football Federation that I represent will defend to maintain this competition till the end.”

Asked about whether it should be postponed, Eto’o added, “What is the reason?

“If the Euro took place while we were in the middle of a pandemic, with full stadiums and there was no incident. We played in several cities in Europe, so why won’t AFCON take place in Cameroon? Give me one good reason.

“Or are you trying to say, like we’ve always been treated, we (Africans) are worth nothing and should suck it up?”

Chelsea duo Hakim Ziyech and Edouard could be missing for the Blues if the competition does go on.
