Can in-form Broja replace Lukaku at Chelsea? Southampton boss says he agrees with Tuchel

Armando Broja was signed up by Southampton on a season-long loan deal.

The 20-year-old was expected to be a back up striker with the Saints, but he has now forced his way into Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans.

With 7 goals in all competitions, Broja is now the highest scorer for the Saints this season, and he seems to be improving every week.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel had recently spoken about the young forward, and urged him to keep improving and working hard.

Hasenhuttl has reacted to Tuchel’s statement and admitted that he agrees with the Chelsea manager.

“Doing so is ‘very simple’, says Hasenhuttl. “Showing good performances every week, and when you get the chance to play, help the team win games,” he said.

“He must – besides his scoring and creating chances – work against the ball. This is what you have to do at Southampton.

“Thomas is absolutely right – he’s a young player who still has to learn a lot. We try to calm down things because we don’t want that he loses focus.

“He’s super convinced about himself – that’s never a problem for a striker. But he is a player that can create chances by himself and score goals by himself. This is a weapon that not a lot of players have.”

Hasenhuttl also believes that whether Broja is able to displace the likes of Romelu Lukaku and make the grade at Chelsea is down to him.

“Every player has the ability when he’s really working hard,” he said. “You can push the limits as high as you want.

“The natural-born speed he has is good for a striker, and the rest you can learn. He has gone through a very good school at Chelsea.”
