Club boss not keen on releasing left back to Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is keen on adding a new left back to the squad this January, as Ben Chilwell has been ruled out until the end of the season.

Chelsea have been linked with two of the club loanees who can fill in that role — Emerson Palmieri and Ian Maatsen.

19-year-old Ian Maatsen is currently having a good spell out on loan with Coventry City, and Coventry City boss Mark Robins is not keen on letting the young defender leave the club.

Robins also doesn’t believe Chelsea have a recall clause in the loan deal, and he believes Chelsea would rather be happy with the youngster’s development at the club.

“I am certainly not going to go into any details of any contractual terms,” the Coventry manager told CoventryLive last month.

“But from my perspective there’s no concern about that. There’s no point in being concerned. I have not heard anything to the contrary.

“He’s with us for the season and hopefully that remains the case because I think he’s getting a really good and grounded experience both here and with the Netherlands.

“And I am sure Chelsea are happy with that and his loan so far, and how he is performing and developing, so I am sure they are happy with that.”
