Following Ben Chilwell’s injury which has ruled him out until the end of the season, Chelsea have made several attempts to provide cover for the left wing-back position in the January transfer window.
Marcos Alonso has been the only natural solution for that role, and even the Spaniard cannot be counted on at all times.
Chelsea had explored a possible deal for Lucas Digne, but the left-back ended up joining Aston Villa from Everton last week.
The Blues have also made several attempts to recall Emerson from his loan spell with Lyon but the French club have refused to release Emerson back to Chelsea.
Emerson is on a season-long loan with the French giants, and the French club have a £12.5m purchase option as part of the agreement.
Chelsea had tried to negotiate a compensation fee with Lyon in order to bring Emerson back to the club, but the French giants rejected Chelsea’s offer of £3.3 million.
And now, Lyon’s head coach Peter Bosz confirmed over the weekend that the Italy international won’t be leaving the club.
When asked about Chelsea’s attempt to recall their on-loan left-back, Bosz said: “Yes, we will keep Emerson.”
Chelsea have recalled Kenedy who was on loan with Brazilian side Flamengo, and he’s currently the only option for cover in the left wing-back position.
