Several players have been linked with a move to Chelsea during the January transfer window and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has also confirmed he wants an addition to his squad.
So what position should Chelsea prioritise during the January transfer window?
Signing a left-back/left wing-back should be Chelsea’s priority during the January transfer window for obvious reasons.
Ben Chilwell’s season-ending injury means Marcos Alonso is the only out-and-out left-sided defender in the squad and with the Blues challenging in four competitions, that is not enough.
Chelsea’s poor form in December coincided with the loss of Chilwell to injury during the 4-0 Champions League victory over Juventus at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues were linked with Lucas Digne at the beginning of the January transfer window but the France international has recently joined Premier League side Aston Villa.
Chelsea have also explored bringing back Emerson Palmieri from his loan spell at Lyon but with the Blues inserting no recall clause in the loan deal due to Lyon having an option to buy at the end of the season, bringing Emerson back to Stamford Bridge is complicated.
The Blues offered to pay Lyon in excess of £3million to break Emerson’s loan deal but the French side rejected the deal as the Italian international is a key player in their squad.
Having missed out on Digne and with Lyon refusing to release Emerson, Chelsea’s search for a replacement for the injured Chilwell continues.
