Former Chelsea starlet Jon Russell had been at the club since age 6, and after 13 years at Chelsea, he was eventually released last year.

The 21-year-old midfielder has admitted that he was hurt with the way he left Chelsea – a club he has been all his life.

Now starring at Huddersfield, Russell is eyeing a return back to the Premier League.

Russell came through the ranks at Stamford Bridge with the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Billy Gilmour.

Speaking about how he left Chelsea, he said: “I’ve been brought up in a Prem environment since I was six, so the target is to get back there.

“It was hard to say goodbye to everyone at Chelsea as I had made so many friends.

“But that is football — it’s all part of the journey and, although I was disappointed to leave, it was important not to lose any sleep over it.

“It was a case of taking one step back to take two steps forward by coming to Huddersfield.

“I always had confidence in myself and wasn’t going to panic.”

Russell also admits that he looked up to Ruben Loftus-Cheek while coming through the ranks.

He said: “At Chelsea, you have to keep standards high.

“I was looking up to Ruben Loftus-Cheek. I had similar injuries to him through growth spurts — he was someone I could relate to.”

On a possible return to the Premier League where he’d face his former club, Russell added: “It’s crazy to think we’re potentially three games away from the Prem.”

Chelsea is more than just a football club to me; it's a passion I share, and my affinity with the Chelsea badge is one that will last forever. As far as watching my favourite team is concerned, I'd rather miss a meal than miss a Chelsea game.
